Dangerous Wind Chills Today & Tuesday, EXTREME COLD WARNING in effect tonight!

A cold weather advisory is in effect today, and an extreme cold warning goes into effect tonight. Click here for details.

A stretch of bitter cold temperatures is expected through Tuesday. Low temperatures will range from around -10 to -20°F, with daytime temperatures struggling to climb above 0°F. Wind chills this morning will range from around -25 to -35°F, with values for tonight into Tuesday morning ranging from -30 to -40°F.

Limit your time outdoors during this timeframe and be prepared for cold weather impacts to vehicles and buildings.

 

BITTER COLD: Today & Tuesday

  • What: Bitterly cold wind chills of -25 to -40°F.
  • Where: Areawide, with the coldest readings over southeast Minnesota and along and north of Interstate 94 in Wisconsin.
  • Timing: This morning’s wind chills will range from -25 to -35°F, improving slightly during the daytime hours to -15 to -30°F. Wind chills tonight into Tuesday morning fall to between -30 to -40°F.
  • Impacts: Frostbite within 10 to 30 minutes, trouble starting vehicles, and the potential for frozen water pipes. These conditions will be especially hazardous to newborns, the elderly, those with chronic illnesses, outdoor workers, and the unhoused.
  • What You Can Do?
    • Dress in layers and limit or avoid time outdoors.
    • Check on vulnerable family, friends, and neighbors.
    • Consume warm food & drinks if going outside. Avoid caffeine & alcohol.
    • Ensure pets and livestock have plenty of food & water and warm shelter.
    • Check your car battery and make sure you have a winter emergency kit, including jumper cables.
    • Insulate exposed water pipes. You may want to run a small stream of water to keep them from freezing.
